A free, lightweight base theme for Gantry 5 by Tiger12 with two- and three-column layout presets and a sample particle. A base for your own design; needs the Gantry 5 framework. Joomla 5 and 6.
Hydrogen is the minimal starter theme of the Gantry 5 framework by Tiger12, which took over Gantry from RocketTheme. It has very little visual design of its own: it is a clean base for building a custom site with Gantry tools. The same theme is also released for WordPress and Grav.
Features
- Lightweight package: about 0.67 MB, compared with about 4.3 MB for Helium.
- Layout presets: two columns left or right, three columns, three columns left or right, home, default, error, offline and body-only.
- Gantry 5 layout manager, menu editor, outlines, assignments and particles.
- A sample particle as a starting point for custom particles.
- A hydrogen-child child theme and a demo variant in the repository.
Installation
- Install the Gantry 5 framework package of the same version.
- Install the theme archive via Extensions → Install and set it as the default template.

Free with no account: the archive is published as a GitHub release asset. The theme is licensed under GPLv2; the framework is dual-licensed MIT and GPLv2+.
Compatibility and requirements
- Joomla 5 and 6. Joomla 6 support was added only in 5.6.2 (June 2026).
- PHP 8.1 to 8.4.
- Gantry 5 framework.
- There is no dedicated theme page or demo; the Gantry downloads page is the only official landing page.
