Akeeba Backup Core is a free backup component from Akeeba Ltd. It gathers a site into a single archive: every file, a snapshot of the database and a bundled installer that sets the copy up in its new home. People use it for scheduled safety copies, for moving between hosts and subdomains, and for carrying a site to a local server (XAMPP, WAMPServer, MAMP) and back. Both backup and restore run in steps over AJAX, so even large sites stay within server execution time limits.

MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL are supported, but a backup can only be restored to the same database engine it was taken from. The Core edition, its documentation and video tutorials cost nothing; support and an edition with extra features are paid.
