есть идея подогнать плагин JL Comments под плагин tabs:
www.regularlabs.com/extensions/tabs#download

прописать только:
{tab <i class="fa fa-commenting" aria-hidden="true">&nbsp;</i> Комментарии (0)|blue}
 
{jcomments}
 
{tab <i class="fa fa-vk" aria-hidden="true">&nbsp;</i> Вконтакте (0)|blue}

в принципе tabs там проверенный и отлично работает:

- есть отличная демо.

иконки прописать Awesome:
fontawesome.io/icon/facebook-official/
fontawesome.io/icon/vk/
fontawesome.io/icon/google-plus/
fontawesome.io/icon/commenting/

Плагин для Joomla тоже есть:
extensions.joomla.org/extension/style-a-...aphy/ns-font-awesome

Не у всех подключены иконочные шрифты... а подключать их ради 4х иконок как то не хорошо.
В комментариях и так используются табы BS2.
Если их и менять, то менять надо на чистый CSS что-то типа вот таких.

Я сожалею, но такой плагин, не может зависеть от какого-то стороннего решения... тут дело даже не в красоте... а в том, что устанавливать одно, чтоб работало другое не очень хорошо.

Ваш вариант тоже не решение.
В плагине tabs, много функций и возможностей, которые может и не будут реализованы у вас:

Более того то что вы ищите это мобильное приложение оно есть в Pro версии то есть в платной.
Ваш вариант не чем не лучше в нем нет мобильной версии тоже.
Более того, я предлагал сделать кнопки Button dropdowns, или как галерею делают, картинка и отступ, мобильные приложения прекрасно понимают этот способ. Будет все подвижно и умещаться.
